Join us here at Stems with Oahu local Gina Kananipua to celebrate summer with a traditional workshop in Lei Po’o!
What is Lei Po’o? Lei po’o making is a deeply rooted Hawaiian tradition in making a lei (garland) for the po’o (head). It is practiced to honor relationships, give blessings, and share gifts. During this workshop you will be lead through a mindfulness practice by Gina followed by a hour and half guided Lei Po’o workshop experience. The workshop is taking place over a two hour period of time at Stems Brooklyn over various weekends. Please select the date that best suites you!

My name is Gina Kananipua, I am a trained Marriage & Family Therapist, founder of Eco Mindful Lei and my belief is that Lei making is not a frivolous activity…it’s medicine. Lei Po’o utilizes all of your senses therefore it’s a form of mindful stress reduction. I live in beautiful Oahu, Hawai’i where I am an active steward of the ‘Āina (land), Sustainability Educator, and student in Halau Kahiwahiwa. My creative practices are rooted in environmental, social and economic sustainability. My teachings are simple traditional acts of play & creativity are both healing in our modern lives. ‘Āina/Earth based play enriches the mind, body, soul. It’s play therapy crossed with nature therapy. I love to empower others to create & mālama (care for) our community, our earth, and this place we call home.
Material use:
Lei Po’o are a type of floral crown made without the use of glue or wires through a traditional technique. Gina will be hosting her authentic Lei Po’o workshop at Stems Brooklyn while she is traveling in New York City. All materials will be responsibly sourced and include traditional Ti leaves from Hawaii. All materials and tools needed for the workshop will be available on the day of the workshop.

- The workshop will start promptly at 11am
- Please arrive around 10:45am to get settled in
- Our studio is located at 96 Knickerbocker Ave (corner of Thames) in Bushwick
- Each ticket is valid for enough materials for 1 guest
